about

"26" is a panorama of post-college life in the modern age. It's really just a song about coming to terms with yourself as an artist and the struggle in balancing one's creative passions with the more practical paths in life--whether it be a job, or marriage, or children. It's a song about being pensive and dissatisfied, perhaps with yourself and those around you. But while struggle pervades the lyrics, there is also a sense of hope buried in there, somewhere.

lyrics

You feel 40 years old, your 26
Living like a penny in a wishing well
Man, you just look like hell

You spent your last dollar on a cool cat scratcher
In the counter at the liquor store
Just hoping you could win some more

But who would wanna live that way
Picking up the broken pieces everyday
Just hoping you don't fall apart
While you're hanging off the strings of your lover's heart

And it feels like your fighting in a civil war
Love will make you dig until you hit the clay
Those trenches keep the blues away

And you spent your last dollar on a flat head shovel
Just to keep the edges free and clear
'Cause there's no room for mistakes around here

But who would wanna live that way?
Picking up the broken pieces everyday
Just hoping you don't fall apart
While you're hanging off the strings of your lover's heart

Working at a restaurant close enough to walk to
Counting down the minutes until the end of the day
Just to catch a few innings of the game

The god damned bull pen blew another big lead
Double in the gap and then the whole crowd cheered
'Cause there's no room for mistakes around here

But who would wanna live that way
Picking up the broken pieces everyday
Just hoping you don't fall apart
While you're hanging off the strings of your lover's heart

I don't really know how you make it work
It seems like it's harder than it has to be
Don't really know how you sleep at night
Wondering how you're gonna make ends meet

How do you hold back the feelings
When they come crashing through the ceiling?
How do you learn to admit that you can be wrong sometimes?

You feel 40 years old, your 26
Living like a penny in a wishing well
Man, you just look like hell

But who would wanna live that way?
Picking up the broken pieces everyday
Just hoping you don't fall apart
While you're hanging off the strings of your lover's heart

But who would wanna live that way?
Picking up the broken pieces everyday
Just hoping you don't fall apart
While you're hanging off the strings of your lover's heart
